D. Copperfield is an update of Charles Dickens' David Copperfield. D. is a graveyard shift doorman for an apartment building in NYC. (The Hero of My Own Life) When no one is watching (but the surveillance camera) he dances and sings. Angus Wickfield, a friend of D.'s since childhood and the son of the building's owner is in love with D. (Barkis is Willin') D. is distracted by his family's money problems (Learn to Act the Play Out) and his friends' misadventures (Pecuniary Difficulties) until he lands a job as a personal assistant to Broadway producer, Harvey Spenlow (With New Life) and falls in love with his son, Theodore (Dora) Spenlow. (Before I Had Sense) Thanks to the machinations of building manager Uriah Heep, money is disappearing. (I Do Apsire to That) D. tries to solve this and other problems while directing a  workshop of a new Broadway show (Dora and Coffee). Angus helps in whatever way he can. (If You Ever Think of Me). Dora and D. announce their marriage but soon it is clear that they are mismatched. (Let Me Hold Your Pens) D. and Angus trick Uriah into revealing the crimes he has committed (I Do Aspire to That-reprise) and Dora falls ill. With little warning Dora dies, having concealed from everyone the cancer growing inside him. (I Have Tried With All My Heart) D. is distraught but manages to direct a hit show nonetheless. After several years away from NYC and a letter from a tenant of D.'s building hoping D. will see what he’s missing (The Mystery of My Own Heart), D. comes back to tell Angus that he has loved him all his life. (If You Ever Think of Me-reprise)
